Straight Up or on the Rocks: A Cultural History of American Drink
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (April, 1993)
Author: William Grimes
Average review score:

Fascinating -- and concise -- history of the cocktail.
William Grimes does a great job summing up the allure of the cocktail in American culture. Too bad the book came out before the big cocktail boom in England during the 90's, or that would have made an excellent chapter. Not just for bartenders or restaurant owners, but the perfect gift for anyone interested in American popular culture!

Entertaining and informative.
With an emphasis on the cocktail, Straight Up Or On The Rocks is a solid and entertaining history of drinking in America. Grimes' appreciation for a good cocktail is evident, and while he has his opinions on certain drinks, you understand why he has them. This could be very useful for restuarant and bar professionals. The drink recipe section in the back, while short, is very good.

Summit

Author: Karen Rispin

Excellent!
I really enjoyed this book. My friends kept urging me to read Palisades, but I just wasn't interested in reading them until I read the back of Summit. I promptly read it and really enjoyed it. I am now working my way through the other twenty or so Palisades that they have.

Wonderful romance about Canadian rock climbers.
I really loved this book. Julie loves rock climbing but thinks that she'd have to give it up and become a "normal" wife if she ever married. So, she's prepared to be an old maid until she meets David. Eventually, David shows her that she can serve God even while pursuing her love of the outdoors.

A Tale of Two Houses
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Melody Carlson, Steve Bjorkman, and Melody Carison
Average review score:

We love this book!
My five year old and I read this book at least twice a month, and we love it. I love that it teaches a valuable precept for living, and I love the rhyming and pictures. And my son hardly ever rejects a suggestion to read this book; what more can I say? Altogether wonderful! Thank you, Melody and Steve. I'm going to order The Other Brother now.

Kids will love this!
This book is an excellent way to teach preschoolers about the parable of the two houses. The story is told in rhyme which keeps their attention and the pictures are a wonderful complement to the story. They will want to read it over and over!

Tears of a Shadow
Published in Paperback by Stella Patchouli (May, 2003)
Author: Stella Patchouli
Average review score:

No lies, no pretense here. Just honesty and courage¿
Once in a while, one has the privilege of coming across (stumbling across really) a book that captivates one's imagination and grips one's emotions from beginning to end.

"Tears of a Shadow" is such a book.
I bought the book initially because one chapter deals with a topic I am doing some research on. When I got the book, instead of going directly to the chapter that was of interest to me, I made the mistake of starting with the very first page... and I found that I could not put the book down. I read it straight through... and read it again... I was hooked...

This book is written simply without false pretense. It consists of a series of vignettes, bits of the puzzle of the author's life. In the end, the puzzle complete, one gets a glimpse of an extraordinary woman's persona.

The book operates on many levels. On one level, it is simply the life of a woman recounted through her many encounters with famous or not so famous people, including Elvis. This is very interesting in and of itself. But, in my opinion, the golden nuggets lie elsewhere on a different layer of reality and consciousness.

A child exiled, exiled from family and loved ones, exiled from her country and culture, and exiled, most importantly, from herself, alone in a world that is not hers must find ways to survive on her own. The book, deep down, is really about her courageous "journey through the desert" from that alien world to the "virgin land" that so many exiles ultimately may call home. We witness her metamorphosis from the child who puts a pillow over her head to shut out an inhospitable world to the woman who creates a world that she can call her own and finds hope in small and insignificant things (the most important ones).

This is an extraordinary book and its power lies in its authenticity. No lies, no pretense here. Just honesty and courage...

I hope this author keeps writing books. I have the sneaking suspicion that she has something special to offer the world...

Elvis' Death Was Not Accidental...
Any Elvis fan will find Stella Patchouli's novel a most compelling and exciting read. With the many Elvis conspiracy theories filing tomes, it is refreshing to find a story that finally makes some sense and is emminently plausible. This book is a must read for any one interested in learning about Elvis's final days through the eyes of a female lover and not one of his male cronies and synchophants. I recommed it highly.

Time Of The Season : The Zombies Collector's Guide
Published in Paperback by Crossfire Pubns (21 May, 1999)
Author: Greg Russo
Average review score:

The essential Zombie reference
The essential Zombies reference, with the history of the band and complete discogagraphy of every recording in every configuration issued through the publication date. Not a literary masterpiece, but a fine book that nicely fits an important niche. Well recommended.

Probably the best book I've read under 100 pages!
At first, one would think the Zombies deserved more than a 96-page book. But don't be fooled by this book's size: the author certainly made the most of each page (full of text in small print) and seems to have exhausted the subject. This isn't simply a discography, as the title implies, but a biography with an emphasis on the discography. And that's what makes this book fascinating, since the Zombies' discography can be rather confusing with so many line-up changes, rerecordings and partial comebacks. Their former members' recent work is also covered. A must for Zombies fans!

Touching the Rock: An Experience of Blindness
Published in Hardcover by Pantheon Books (April, 1991)
Author: John M. Hull
Average review score:

Moving memoir
Heard the taped version of TOUCHING THE ROCK by John
Hull, a moving memoir of a university lecturer who slowly
lost his vision over a period of several years . . . he recorded
his thoughts in a diary, and I must admit to being touched
about how both he and his family dealt with his
condition . . . even typing this brings teary thoughts to
mind . . . imagine having seen a child as a youngster,
then not being able to see her again as she grows up . . . or
never having seen another child from the time he was
born . . . it makes me want to hug my daughter, Risa . . . and
to appreciate all that I do have!

A stunning picture of what it is like to become blind
This book was given to me as a gift a few years ago, and while I am neither going blind nor am actually blind, I found many of the ideas and experiences and thoughts and feelings expressed in this book to be very similar to my own. I have some particular cognitive difficulties (prosopagnosia, often called "face blindness") which give me a rather different outlook on life from most people, and I was amazed to see just how much in common my outlook on life was when compared with the author's life experiences. Well, maybe I wasn't that surprized, but it was still an eye-opening (no pun intended) experience for me to read this book in that context.

Needless to say, I enjoyed this book very very much. It reads more like a personal journal or diary than an actual book, and that gives the whole book a very personal experience when reading it.

Turquoise Days: The Weird World of Echo & the Bunnymen
Published in Paperback by Soft Skull Pr (September, 2002)
Author: Chris Adams
Average review score:

Great Book
I'm so glad I came across this book! It's obvious Chris Adams was allowed into the inner Bunnyman circle. Lyrics, conversations, stories, this book has beaucoup info. It's the best book I've read on a band in a long time.

The coolest book ever published
This book goes beyond a mere biographic narrative of a band. It delivers as advertised, presented in the coolest layout design I've ever seen. If you're a Bunnymen fan then this is a must have; the lyrics alone are worth it, if you're a music fan then this is a must have because of the historical content with regards to music, Liverpool, and it shows that as a society there was substance in the music we listened to. This book proves "POPULAR" music did not just move from the 70's and disco into the 80's and hair bands. There was Echo and the Bunnymen bridging the gap from "POPULAR" music over to music that mattered and here they are telling us how it all happened. Mr. Adams has redefined the rock/music biography. Excellent!

U2: The Ultimate Compendium of Interviews, Articles, Facts and Opinions from the Files of Rolling Stone

Authors: Rolling Stone Magazine and Rolling Stone Magazine

U2 Chronicles
If you are a reader of Rolling Stone magazine and a fan of U2, then you should pick up this book. It compiles all the articles, concert reviews, album reviews, random notes, interviews, etc. that have appeared in the magazine on the band. It is interesting to read the earlier stuff before the band became superstars. A great compilation.

The Best U2 book ever made!
My boyfriend and I have been together for about 4 months. I've definetly heard of U2 before, but I never really got into them until my boyfriend introduced me to their amazing compilation of songs. Ever since, I have been a die hard fan of U2 just like my boyfriend. I was searching for a christmas gift for my boyfriend, and I came across this book. I orderd it and intended to give it to my boyfriend, but I liked it so much I had to keep it for myself. The book has great and vibrant images and very conclusive articles. This book is a must for and die-hard fan!
